Nepali communities in Sydney ,Australia are proudly taking an initiation to run a Nepali Language school in sydney.According to organisers the Venue is in the Marrickville Public West School, Cnr of Beauchamp andLivingstone, Marrickville (enter via car-park on Beauchamp). The NLS is at present being managed by a Steering Committee (SC) comprising ofrepresentatives from GA and the GNC. The ownership of the NLS rests with the GAand GNC for all working purposes.
The GA and GNC feel that it would be productive to have a centralised approachfor a NLS in Sydney. This would mean:
- One approach based on quality that is consistently applied across allbranches.
- Better chances of securing funding, qualified staff and other resources.
- Quality curriculum that is applied consistently.
- The School being managed by a SC consisting of community associationrepresentatives, academic staff and parents, with branch leaders. The steering committeeis essentially a working committee consisting of individuals that are activelyinvolved in the conceptualisation and design of the program.
To develop a sustainable program teaching Nepali and to bring about awarenessof Nepalese culture and social practices.
The objectives of the NLS are to:
- Teach children between the ages of 5 to 12 years of age to writeand read in Nepali with a particular focus on teaching them the NepaleseDevanagari script.
- Incorporate cultural and social activities to generate awarenessof Nepalese cultural and social norms and to identify better with theirNepalese roots and heritage.
- Mobilise qualified teachers and engage motivated and talentedvolunteers for cultural and social activities.
- Ensure a safe and conducive environment where learningactivities can take place.
- Have in place an interactive process whereby parents activelyinvolve themselves in the development of their child and the program, withoutimpinging on the role and responsibilities of the Academic Coordinator, teaching staff and volunteers of the program.
- To teach non-Nepalese individuals Nepali.
To initiate the school, the Steering Committee is organising an Open Day on the7th of March 2010 at 4 pm at the Marrickville West Public School. The Open daywill be an opportunity for parents to get to know more about the languageschool, to obtain an understanding of the operations of the school, theteaching methodology and an opportunity to meet not only the Steering Committeemembers but also other parents who want to provide their children anopportunity to discover the Nepali language and to learn more about Nepaliculture.
